Taken by Jennifer Dawson: a book review

Taken by Jennifer Dawson
Brandon Townsend III

Rich, beautiful and entitled, once upon a time he was king of the trust fund babies. He took anything and anyone he wanted, until one day, he walked away without explanation. Now, he’s an untouchable mystery, one I’m determined to crack. And I’m not talking about anything mundane like his bed. No, I want something far more valuable.

I want into his head.

Veronica Westwood has blown into my life creating chaos in her wake, and I don’t know quite what to do with her. Rich, beautiful and entitled, she represents everything I’ve sworn off in life, and her being unexpectedly clever doesn’t change that. Instincts warn me to stay away, and that’s just what I intend to do, no matter her attempts to wear me down. I’m good at saying no, or at least I was until I met her. I don’t understand it, but she’s like a weakness, and a man like me can’t have weakness.

I simply won’t allow it.

Let me begin by saying that I am truly saddened by the ending of this series. As you can read in past reviews (I'll link those below), I have come to love each character that Dawson shares in this series. She has truly given me a group of friends that I will forever carry around in my heart. A group of friends that, like the main female character of this book, I'd love to have as my own.

This book, as with all the others, was one that I just couldn't put down. I was drawn back into this world as if I had never left. I loved it! Another thing that I love about this series is that even though each book covers a new set of characters, each book can still be read as a standalone. Reading them as an entire series simply paints a bigger world for you to immerse yourself into.

As for the subject matter of these books: BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Sadism and Masochism). Dawson does a wonderful job in covering this particular lifestyle. The sexual scenes are written well & never in a way that I, personally, found to be too uncomfortable or off-putting. At times it was romantic and other times it was straight to the point and raw. Each scenario written in a way that the reader could feel the emotions of both Brandon & Vanessa.

Taken (as well as the other books from the Undone series) can be purchased from:

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak: a book review

The Book Thief  by Markus Zusak

"The extraordinary #1 New York Times bestseller that is now a major motion picture, Markus Zusak's unforgettable story is about the ability of books to feed the soul.

It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still.

Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.

In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger, has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time."

I have often heard this book mentioned by my book reading peers. Most mentions came in the form of raves about how amazing the book is. Many even called it their favorite read of all time. This being said, it took me a while but I finally took the time to pick it up a couple months ago.

There really is no way for my to sum up all of the emotions and love I formed for this book while I was reading it. Honestly, all I can say is 'WOW' these people were right once again. Markus Zusak definitely wrote a book that will stand the test of time.

I usually point out my opinions of the characters & how well they were written. I will not be doing so for this book. All I will say is that I loved the ones I feel I was supposed to & hated the ones he clearly meant for us to hate. I laughed with them, cried for them, & shared all their emotions in between. And a good two months later, I find myself still thinking about this book & these characters.

2017 Updates

I wanted to take some time to check in & catch everyone up on what I've been up to. As you can see, I've obviously not been active on here for quite a while.... Here's why:

That's right folks! We finally got moved into the new house. (This picture is, of course, from right before we moved in) It was such a long & sometimes depressing journey but we were finally able to move in on August 28th 😁And let me just tell you- It was totally worth the wait! The only thing that could make it better is when I'm able to actually start putting my office together... Tax refund time can't get here fast enough.

I've also been enjoying spending time with the two youngest while I've been away. Charleigh Grace is 4 now. This means that it's my last year to spend with her before she heads off to Kindergarten next year. It's a bittersweet time for me. I'm going to miss having her around but on the other hand, I just may get more blogging & reading done.... maybe.

That's a big maybe because of my lil' man. He will be turning 8 months old in a few days. It's insane how much time has flown by. He's already low crawling all over the house, cutting his first 2 teeth, & saying 'mama' & 'dada'. I'm not going to lie- I'm sad sometimes thinking about how he's probably going to be my last baby.

Maybe that explains my sudden jump into hyper-drive where my hobbies are concerned.

Speaking of hobbies- I guess I should just jump in and let you know what all I have going on at the moment...

1. I'm here. Trying to get back into book blogging. Reviews & other bookish things are in the near future. After all, there have been tons of books that I've read this year that I just HAVE to share.

2. My Instagram account is becoming more active. Check it out to find book related photos & photos of my numerous pets. My current goal is to gain more followers & up my bookish photo game.

3. I'm planning to participate in NANOWRIMO next month. Who knows, maybe this year I'll actually get something done. hahahaha.... High Hopes, buddy. That's what I've got.

4. Writing has begun on a recent children's book idea. My husband's best friend is going to be doing the illustrations for me. I'll try to keep everyone updated via here & my Instagram account. So keep your eye out. I'm super excited about this project & we both feel that it could become a real hit.

Well, that's about all that I have going on right now. What have you been up to since I've been gone? Leave a comment below & let me know one favorite book you're read in the last 6 months.
